This research has the purpose to investigate how the Belbin Team Roles methodology explains how Innovation Teams in a Research and Development (R&D) environment accelerate their innovation process through better teamwork. The approach for this research is to use the results of 730 respondents of the Belbin Team Role Self-Perception Inventory and the experience of delivering 68 Belbin feedback sessions where teams received their Belbin Team Result. This research confirms that all individuals and teams have their own specific mix of Belbin Team Roles and consequently each team has a unique team innovation culture and climate. What the teams do have in common, is that the team members all benefit from knowing each other’s Belbin Team Roles and the effect of their own roles on the teamwork.

Dr Meredith Belbin defines a team role as: “A tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way.”
